DESCRIPTION:Join us at 2:00 Saturday\, July 13 for a Prairie Talk Featuring Frederic Remington and presented by Doug Claassen. \nFrederic Remington (1861 – 1909) was an American painter\, illustrator\, sculptor\, and writer who specialized in depictions of the Old American West\, specifically concentrating on the last quarter of the 19th century American West and images of cowboys\, American Indians\, and the U.S. Cavalry. \nClaassen grew up in the Plum Grove community in northwest Butler County and is still involved with the family livestock and crop farm. His interest in Remington began at an early age with the stories told by his grandfather about Frederic Remington. Claassen and his brothers purchased the Remington sheep ranch in 1983\, which further sparked his interest to learn more about Remington’s. \nHomemade cookies and water will be served at the Prairie Talk. DESCRIPTION:What did Josh and Jim Hoy see and learn in the high Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan? The story will be told in a Prairie Talk at a historic ranch near Matfield Green at 2:00 p.m. Saturday\, July 6. \nIn 2017\, the Hoys toured the country extensively\, riding hundreds of miles of mountains with nomadic herdsmen\, traveling with a warlord through his vast holdings\, and hunting with eagles. In the Prairie Talk\, the Hoys will speak of the nomadic culture\, horsemanship\, and stockmanship of the Kyrgyz people\, and the flora and fauna of the high steppe. They will contrast the culture to what they have seen in the Argentina gaucho\, Australian outback stockmen\, American cowboy and buckaroo\, and Mexican vaquero. \nJosh Hoy plans to bring a horse to demonstrate with gear and artifacts from Kyrgyzstan. \nHomemade cookies and water will be served at the Prairie Talk. DESCRIPTION:At 2:00 p.m. Saturday\, June 29\, the story of the Crocker family will be shared by Matt Methvin in a Prairie Talk at Pioneer Bluffs. \nThe Crocker Ranch\, with extensive cattle and farming operations\, was begun in 1866 by Captain Erastus Bryant Crocker\, a Civil War veteran. The Captain’s sons\, Edward and Author Crocker\, expanded and by 1918 had a 10\,000 acre ranch\, one of the most extensive in the area. \nToday\, the Crocker Ranch is an excellent example of an early 20th century working cattle ranch complex and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nHomemade cookies and water will be served at the Prairie Talk. DESCRIPTION:It will be a classic\, old-time Barn Dance in the loft of our 1915 barn\, considered by some to be the best dance floor in the Flint Hills. \nPioneer Bluff historic ranch is located just north of Matfield Green on the beautiful Flint Hills Scenic Byway. \nDances will begin at 6:30 and alternate between couple’s dances (two-step and waltz) and caller-led\, group or “contra” dances (in lines\, circles and squares). Beginners are invited to come at 6:00 p.m. for caller-led-dance instruction. \nNew to the event this year\, Lisa Harris is featured as caller for the group dances. She specializes in calling for all levels of dancers\, including beginners. \nMusic will be provided by top notch musicians from across Kansas – in the seven-person Land Band. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Pioneer Bluffs on April 28th to hear more stories from Emil Redmon’s Cow! \nMark Feiden – photographer\, videographer\, and creator of Emil Redmon’s Cow – returns to share his latest round of interviews funded in large part by a generous grant from the Trusler Foundation of Emporia\, in collaboration with Pioneer Bluffs Center for Flint Hills Ranching Heritage\, and the Wabaunsee County Historical Society and Museum. \nThis ongoing project seeks to preserve great stories from Flint Hills farm and ranch folk\, focusing not on the stories of people’s lives so much as it is the “tales that people tell—folklore.” \nTo date\, more than 250 thoroughly entertaining stories have been archived at www.RedmonsCow.org \nAs has been the case in years past\, you are sure to recognize any number of familiar faces! \nThe presentation will begin at 2 pm in our historic 1915 Barn\, followed by an informal reception for our VIP guests – the storytellers themselves!  Cookies and water will be provided.  Come early to tour our grounds and see updated displays in our historic 1908 ranch house.  RSVP appreciated\, but not required.

DESCRIPTION:Reception 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.\nAn “open barn” reception will welcome and thank Executive Directors at Pioneer Bluffs. Lynn Smith\, the recently retired Executive Director\, and Christie Reinhardt\, the new Executive Director\, will greet visitors in the barn. The community is invited to stop in and visit\, enjoy light refreshments and stay for the Round-Up activities. Smith is the first Executive Director of the nonprofit and helped the organization grow into the well-respected Center for Flint Hills Ranching Heritage that it is today. Reinhardt is originally from Kansas\, and has recently retired from a public health leadership position in Alaska.\nOriginally planned for Saturday\, September 2nd\, this reception had to be postponed due to illness. This is the rescheduled event. \n1:00 Ranch Activities for all ages \n2:00 – 3:00: Prairie Talk: Prairie Talk: Kansas Music History by Derrick Doty \n\nDerrick Doty \nIn addition to the talk\, Derrick Doty will include a music performance featuring the fiddle of Henry Rogler. This activity is sponsored by Humanities Kansas. \nCowboy Poetry \n\n3:15: Scott Wiswell\n3:45: Carl Stueve\n\n4:30 – 6:30: 3 Trails West \n \nThis performance features vintage Western Music drawn from the Silver Screen Era of Cowboy Music and Bob Wills-style swing. SUMMARY:Prairie Talk: The Anderson/Patton/Johnson Stories
DESCRIPTION:Matt and Julia Anderson\, along with their son and daughter-in-law\, manage the family ranch outside of Alma. They run an award-winning cow-calf operation\, annually raising roughly 500 head of Angus cattle from birth until the calves are one or two years old. They also offer birth to butcher beef\, direct to consumer. \nThe Patton and Johnson families came to southern Chase County shortly after the Civil War. The Pattons settled west of Matfield Green and the Johnsons settled east of Matfield Green. Both families farmed the fertile soil along the creeks and ranched in the rich upland native tallgrass prairie pastures. Six generations later\, some Patton/Johnson ancestors still live and work in the Flint Hills. This Prairie Talk will focus on how farming and ranching were equally important to the economic survival of pioneer Flint Hills families. The symbiotic relationship between farming and ranching still exists in 2023. \n12:30 Anderson Story\n1:30 Patton/Johnson Story \nFeel free to bring a picnic lunch and come out early to visit with friends. DESCRIPTION:Flint Hills ranch families have stories to tell of their unique heritage. We will have the opportunity to hear two such stories from Carol House and Nancy Methvin. \n1:30 The House Story\n2:30 The Methvin Story \nAt 1:30 p.m. Saturday\, July 1\, Carol House of Arkansas City will discuss her late husband\, Bill House\, who went from being an attorney to raising Grand Champion Herefords. After practicing law in the 1940’s\, Bill House returned to the family Hereford business in Chautauqua County. By the early 1950’s\, House had risen to the top of the National Order of Hereford Growers\, winning Grand Champion four times at the American Royal in Kansas City\, MO. In his 65 years of ranching\, House was a strong influence in legislative initiatives that impacted the entire beef cattle industry. He served as past president of the Kansas Livestock Association\, the American Hereford Association\, and the American National Cattleman’s Association\, now the National Cattlemen’s Association. In 1964\, House was named Distinguished Jayhawk of the Year by then Governor Anderson. During the Prairie Talk\, Carol House will tell many stories\, possibly even how an 1\,800 lb plastic ornamental bull came to be in her front yard. \nAt 2:30 p.m. Saturday\, July 1\, Nancy Methvin of Lincolnville will tell how her Louisiana ranch family’s summer adventure turned into 46 years of living in\, and loving\, the Flint Hills of Kansas.The Methvin family ranched in Louisiana Bayou Country on land that had been in the family since 1714. The family came to the Flint Hills for one summer in 1977\, and stayed on land that was once part of the original 101 Ranch and the Frye/Ronsick Ranch. Nancy will discuss the history of the areas they have lived. \nThere is no cost to attend these Prairie Talks\, but donations are appreciated and will support future program events. \nRefreshments will be available. DESCRIPTION:Bobbie Hammond has managed as many as 25\,000 acres of Flint Hills grass and 8\,000 head of cattle. At the same time\, she was a professional rodeo barrel racer. She won in the Old Timers’ Rodeo National Finals when she was a grandmother – and that was 40 years ago. Hammond will share her unique life story in an upcoming Prairie Talk. \nThe Prairie Talk will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday\, October 8\, at Pioneer Bluffs. \n“I always thought cowboyin’ is women’s work\,” said Hammond. “It never occurred to me there was anything I couldn’t do because I was a woman. I was working with my dad from the time I was big enough to ride.” \n“I know it isn’t the kind of work every woman would want to do. Probably not every man can do it\,” she continues. “It’s a lot of hard work. I do everything from breaking colts to fixing water gaps to treating sick steers. It’s knowing what an old steer will do before he even thinks of it himself.” \nHammond has been featured in “Larry Hatteberg’s KANSAS PEOPLE\,” and Forbes Magazine. \nToday at age 83\, Hammond is still working. “I don’t let a lot of grass grow under my feet\,” she says. “It is a lifestyle\, I think.” \nThere is no cost to attend this Prairie Talk; donations are gratefully accepted. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the 90-minute concert begins at 7:00 p.m. \nThe “Great American Songbook” features the most important and influential popular songs and jazz standards that have stood the test of time. The Great Plains Jazz Orchestra includes vocalists reminiscent of Frank Sinatra\, Sammy Davis Jr\, and Frankie Valli\, who will perform familiar tunes such as “Mack the Knife\,” “The Lady is a Tramp\,” and “Young and Foolish.” \nThe Great Plains Jazz Orchestra is a highly acclaimed ensemble under the direction of Keith Woolery. “We look forward to sharing our music with the people of the Flint Hills\,” says Woolery. “We hope you will feel the same sentiment as former president George W. Both music and visual art are merged in “Peace on the Prairie\,” a collaboration by singer-songwriter\, Annie Wilson\, and artist\, Susan Rose. \nAt 2:00 p.m. Saturday\, October 16\, Pioneer Bluffs presents “Peace on the Prairie\,” featuring an art exhibit by Susan Rose\, a conversation with Rose and Wilson\, a concert by Wilson – also known as the Flint Hills Balladeer – and her Tallgrass Express String Band\, a music-and-art video by Dave Kendall\, and an informal reception. \nThis event is also Tallgrass Express’s CD Release Concert\, with all ten songs from their new album Peace on the Prairie\, volume 4 in their Songs of the Flint Hills series. \nThe art exhibit and video will be in the 1915 barn at Pioneer Bluffs. Weather permitting\, all other activities will be outdoors. The program concludes at 5:00 p.m. \n“As Susan completed each of her 12 paintings illustrating my song lyrics\, I was in awe at how she created these beautiful scenes I was trying to convey in the words of my song\,” said Wilson.  “It is one of the greatest honors of my life that Susan chose to do this project.” \nIn describing her work\, Rose says\, “My paintings are inspired by the beauty of the prairie\, the sky and the creatures that call it home.  I am particularly drawn to capture the play of light and shadow on the local landscape\, and focus on the small\, but beautiful\, elements in nature that are easily overlooked or taken for granted.” \nBeverages and snacks will be served during the reception. SUMMARY:Women of the Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Farm and ranch women typically play many roles. They are some combination of daughter\, wife\, mother\, business partner\, driver\, drover\, and cowhand all rolled into one. And a woman who began filling these roles in the first part of the 20th century has witnessed extraordinary change. It is likely that she has hauled water to bathe her children\, cooked over a wood stove\, and spent time behind a team of horses. \nAt 2:00 p.m. Saturday\, September 18\, Mark Feiden and Farrell Hoy will share highlights from interviews with farm/ranch women. A panel discussion with some of the interviewees will follow the film screening. This Prairie Talk will be held in the loft of the historic barn at Pioneer Bluffs near Matfield Green. \nCovid precautionary measures will be taken\, including limiting the size of the audience to 75. Reservations for this Talk are required\, and accepted first-come. Masks will be required inside the barn. \nPioneer Bluffs has teamed with photographer/filmmaker Mark Feiden\, author/educator Farrell Hoy\, and Humanities Kansas\, in this story collection project focused on the contributions of women to Flint Hills farming and ranching. \n“When I began interviewing older farm and ranch folk in 2017\, I quickly discovered something that should not have been a surprise\,” said Feiden. “Women often have the richer body of stories—because they’ve worn so dang many hats!” \n“When I finished interviewing 99 year old best friends Evelyn Zeckser and Mary Schultz\, in 2019\, I knew that I wanted to pull together an effort focused on older women—and I wanted to do it sooner rather than later\,” continued Feiden. “I also knew that Farrell Hoy had an ongoing interest in documenting the lives of ranch women and so I approached her about teaming up. The experience has exceeded my expectations. Each and every interview has been a delight. I look forward to sharing the films—and seeing how the transcripts inform Farrell’s book project.” \nInterviews include: Eula Barrett\, Bobby Hammond\, and Donita Rogers of Chase County; Irlene Huntington\, Jackie Seeley\, and Pat Surber of Greenwood County; Irene Thoes of Pottawatomie County; and Carol Feyh and Carol Michaelis of Wabaunsee County. \nThis is a free community event\, funded by Humanities Kansas. A second screening of the film will be scheduled for spring\, 2022\, in Wabaunsee County. \nThose with reservations are invited to come early and explore the grounds\, bring a picnic\, or hike the new nature trail. \nMark Feiden\, through his ongoing project Emil Redmon’s Cow (www.redmonscow.org) is dedicated to building a significant archive of “stories from the farm and ranch.” Mark is a sixth-generation Kansan with pioneer roots in Reno and Wabaunsee countries. In 1998\, he co-founded The Konza Press (www.TheKonzaPress.com) with the express mission of “promoting the people\, places and rich history of Kansas.”  A photographer\, he has published a number of books on Kansas and the Flint Hills. Mark makes his home in Roeland Park\, Kansas. \nFarrell Hoy is a fifth-generation descendant of the Flying H Ranch\, established by her great-great grandparents in Cassoday\, Kansas\, in 1877. She grew up helping her grandparents on the ranch\, and from an early age noticed the many different tasks that fell to her grandmother\, from performing nearly all the domestic duties to working alongside the men on much of the ranch work.  Hoy is Faculty Development Director at Johnson County Community College. She is currently working on a book about Flint Hills women; she lives and works in Overland Park\, Kansas.

SUMMARY:A concise history of the Santa Fe Trail
DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 1821\, the Santa Fe Trail was actively in use for almost 60 years. How could a relatively short-lived highway of commerce have a legacy lasting two hundred years? A Prairie Talk will explore this subject. \nAt 1:30 p.m. Saturday\, August 21\, Steve Schmidt\, of Hesston\, will present “Santa Fe Trail 101” in the loft of the historic barn at Pioneer Bluffs. \nThis concise history will explore how the Santa Fe Trail played a key role in international events\, influenced the global economy\, how it differed greatly from the Oregon and California Trails\, and what caused it to die out. \nThis program has been succinctly described as “a broad-brush overview of the Santa Fe Trail: when\, where\, what\, why\, how\, now (but no brown cow).” \nSchmidt\, an amateur historian\, knows Santa Fe Trail history. He and his wife\, Glenda\, are preserving a piece of the Trail on land they own in Marion County\, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and has received Historic Site Certification from the National Park Service. As a member of the Santa Fe Trail Association\, Cottonwood Crossing Chapter\, he has earned numerous awards for promotion and preservation of the Trail over the past 20 years. Schmidt has written a booklet\, “Lost Spring\, Marion County\, Kansas\, A Historical Perspective” which is available free at SantaFeTrail.org. \nTo ensure ample chairs are out for this presentation\, reservations are requested but not required. DESCRIPTION:A local farmer/rancher combines his love of music and entertainment with daily ag life\, and the result has landed Farmer Derek Klingenberg onto the world stage. \nWhat does the Farmer say?” At 1:30 p.m. Saturday\, March 7\, Farmer Derek will answer this question in a unique community presentation at Pioneer Bluffs. \nDerek Klingenberg of Peabody has more than 50 million views on his YouTube channel\, which features music parodies and original music showing a fun\, personal perspective of farm life. In nearly 200 videos\, he serenades cattle with a trombone\, watches a meteor shower from a hammock over a cornfield irrigation pivot\, and feeds cattle with robots through the internet. In a slightly serious video\, the Bethel College Choir sang in his grain bin. \n“This is where I raise grain\, beef\, kids\, and creativity\,” says Klingenberg about his YouTube channe \nThis community program will be held in the restored 1915 barn at Pioneer Bluffs. The venue will be changed if inclement weather. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Those who make reservations will be notified directly of a venue change\, and it will be posted on the Pioneer Bluffs Facebook page. \nThere is no charge for this event\, donations are appreciated and will support future programs at Pioneer Bluffs.
